Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young teenager. Ford began to be attracted to acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford then applied for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford did not finish her studies in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. However, Tate soon began to garner recognition for her stand-up comedic performances and added stand-up comedy to her repertoire in 1996.
